So there were two new rules in Basketball this year: 11.4.2.4. In the sports of boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball, no team’s power rating should be affected negatively by an opponent’s having to forfeit some/all of its victories. 11.4.2.5. For all varsity boys’ and girls’ district basketball contests, the winning team shall receive at least as many power points for winning the game as the losing team does for losing the game. I will say the first one left me scratching my head as to how to implement....but the second one is straight up basic math and easy peasy...took me all of 10 minutes to modify my spreadsheet for it. So the LHSAA put out a memo today saying that there wasn't a formula given to them for clarification on how to implement, so they are taking it upon themselves to modify the by-laws and remove those two rules!!!!!

Would you please share the modification you made to the formula so that it can be used this year for basketball power ranking as voted on & passed by LHSAA principals.

11.4.2.5. For all varsity boys’ and girls’ district basketball contests, the winning team shall receive at least as many power points for winning the game as the losing team does for losing the game.
So if a team wins their district game, I calculate the winning teams PR (5+losing team's wins) and I calculate the losing teams PR (1/2 of winning teams wins), and give the Winning team the higher PR.
I didn't think it would affect that many teams, but I am new to Basketball, and apparently it happens a decent amount. There were 17 games in Boys BB when I did my audit on 1/23, and about 15 on the Girls side. Soccer kept me busy this week so I didnt get to audit.

I understand that but it is my understanding the reason the LHSAA is not implementing the power ranking that was voted in is because they don't have a formula. They had over a year to come up with something but apparently did nothing until yesterday when the memo was emailed out. Everyone knows that the LHSAA is Principals association and the principals voted for this change but LHSAA did nothing to implement it. If there was an issue it should have been brought up before now. Nothing was said during the coaches convention in the summer, nothing was said at the basketball advisory meetings, and nothing was said at the annual convention this year. Why were principals allowed to vote on this in 2017 if LHSAA knew it could not be put in place? Why weren't principals notified at the annual convention in January of this year that the change to the basketball power ranking system would not be used this year. Seems like LHSAA dropped the ball and rather than find a way to fix it they decide "Oh we're just not going to do that even though the principals voted for it." Are they a Principals Association or not? Seems like they do exactly what they want with no consequences. I'm sure coaches took for granted that the new system was being used for district games, why would they think anything differently. Why is it in the handbook if it's not really a rule? Bottom line they had a year to figure this out but did nothing!

I hear you and agree 100%. The thing is, this rule is simple. Took me all of 5 minutes to come up with a way to calculate it.
If I win and get 8 because you are 3-10 and you lose and get 9 because I'm 18-0, then I get 9 too.
Am I missing something?
As far as the other rule, I agree, if they didnt get more details on how that would work, then shame on them for waiting. I was scared that rule was going to kill my rating accuracy because I had no idea how they were going to use it.
LHSAA...need a ratings Guru? Let me know!

So I noticed this earlier this year. Wasn't the formula for win 5+ opponents wins and for a lose opponents win times 1/3? When did it become a 1/2? And now they are taking away the district points so a losing team gets more power points? This is just getting crazy.

I can't speak as to when this changed to 1/2, but it isn't highlighted in this years Handbook, so I think that means that it wasn't a change this year.
